ORGANIZATION HISTORY

In 1977 members of the Beverly, Morgan Park, and Mount Greenwood communities gathered to brainstorm on how to support the Catholic students who attended the local public high school, Morgan Park. It was there that the dream of the Catholic Youth Ministry Center was born. Through the tremendous efforts of many community members and civic leaders, the facility was purchased and renovated. Dedication was held on September 30, 1979. Throughout our history, thousands of young people have participated in our programs.

The Catholic Youth Ministry Center began as a unique youth program based on the concept of the Newman Centers on many college campuses. From our inception we have welcomed all students regardless of faith. As the number of Catholic students at Morgan Park High School decreased over the years, the Center staff and board recognized the need to be ecumenical in nature. The Center focuses on instilling moral values in young people through relationships, programs and activities. The need for acceptance, belonging, and positive peer relationships have remained important to young people throughout our history and the Center provides a safe place to address those needs.

Morgan Park High School is a Chicago Public High School of 1,100 students on the south side of Chicago. The Ministry Center is the only program of its kind associated with a Chicago Public High School. We are proud to be an integral part of the high school community.
